Meet our Sponsored Horses

How you can help

Even when our horses are fully sponsored, we still need help with unexpected medical expenses.  You can choose to donate to our "general fund" to help support the entire herd, or you can sponsor a horse that isn't yet sponsored. Sponsorship donations are tax deductible and your donation goes to help provide the very best care.

You can read each horse's bio below, as well as link to their Gallery of photos and videos.

Rosie

Rosie joined the herd in December 2024.

Rosie was part of a very larger owner surrender of ~35 horses, after a major loss in that family.  The Humane Society of North Texas adopted part of that herd.  Rosie is a well-bred, easy going quarter horse who was never ridden.  She is the perfect companion for Buster, who is almost completely blind.  She keeps him calm and is very happy hanging out with him.  Rosie loves her hay and treats and is still deciding about "the people".

*Birthday: April 27, 2006

*Homecoming: December 27, 2024

MAGGIE

Maggie joined the herd in March 2021.

Maggie is a registered quarter horse who had been working as a show horse in a special needs program in Weatherford.  She has a stifle injury that ended her show career, so she came to retire at GRS.  She has regular injections to keep her comfortable.  She has a strong personality and is a great fit in with Princess and Valentine.

*Birthday:  March 12, 2001

*Homecoming: March 18, 2021

Hammy & Roux

Hammy joined the herd in July 2024.

Hammy is a very big guy and a quiet, calm, all-around pleasure horse.  He was donated to GRS when his owner "outgrew" him in skills.  Hammy is now in with our big herd - Roux, Rexi, Jessie, and Hank.  He and Roux have bonded and are a great pair.  He's all settled in and very much loved!

*Birthday: Likely 2004

*Homecoming: July 27, 2024

Roux joined the herd in February 2024.

Roux was purchased from the sale barn, but her owner couldn't afford to take care of her. When she came to GRS, she was extremely skinny. But even in her sad state, she was friendly and engaging. Roux loves people and she loves cookies! She was supposed to be a foster...but she's here to stay. Within a few months we had her back in great shape.

*Birthday: Likely 2004

*Homecoming: Feb 19, 2024

Abby, Angel, & Waylon

Abby, Angel, & Waylon joined the herd in July 2023.

We lost Waylon in 2024.  He was a sweetheart, and Angel's best friend.  We will miss him terribly.

Abby is a retired barrel horse who came to us with Waylon and Angel.  She is black with a white blaze and has some Arabian in her that you can see from her delicate face.  She is very personable and loves people and cookies, following you around to check your pockets.  She stands politely for fly spray and the farrier but will not tolerate shots one bit!  She has aggressive allergies, so we are working on different options to help with her itchy skin - supplements, medicines, and baths (since she will not allow us to give allergy shots!).  She's a sweet and fun girl.

Angel and Waylon had been together for 20 years.  Angel was the first donkey to join GRS' family.  She is very friendly and likes to just hang out.  She loves feeding time and "talks" to us as soon as she sees the Ranger.  She wears a fly mask during summer because her nose gets sun-burned.  She had a slight limp on her front right, but boots and anti-inflammatory medicine have kept her comfortable.

*Birthdays: Likely 1999

*Homecoming: July 29, 2023

Max

Max joined the herd in October 2023.

Max is a registered quarterhorse paint who lived with one family his whole life.  One of his people passed away, and the other had to move out of state so that his kids could take care of him.  They thought they had a forever plan for Max, but it fell through.  So Max came to us!

Max has some arthritis and skin allergies.  He loves people and he really really loves the minis! He is very easy to handle - a gentle giant.

*Birthday: April 15, 1998

*Homecoming: October 17, 2023

Cowboy

Cowboy joined the herd in July 2023.

Cowboy's mama rescued him in 2016 and thought he'd stay with her forever.  She and her husband loved Cowboy so much, and Cowboy had several friends, both horses and donkeys, at their house. Sadly, Cowboy's mama got sick.  She kept him at home as long as she could, but then asked if he could retire here.  We are so happy to have Cowboy here.  He enjoys being in with Twister and Flame.  He is a big-time foodie and loves meals and cookies.  He has a little arthritis and takes anti-inflammatory meds.  He also has a slit in his nose that we keep clean, and he generally has to wear a fly mask to keep the flies away from his old injury.  He loves people and is a fun horse.

*Birthday: April 28, 2003

*Homecoming: July 27, 2023

Aspen & YoYo

Aspen and YoYo joined the herd in September 2023.

These two beautiful ponies were loved and cared for, but their humans had serious health issues and could no longer care for them.  They were on the way to the sale barn but a fantastic young lady stepped in - she had been bringing them feed and hay for a year.  She reached out to GRS for help, and one of our donors agreed to fully sponsor them to come here.

YoYo is 10 years older than Aspen and is very shy.  Aspen is the total opposite and is very interested in people (and cookies).  The two girls are a bonded pair and will stay here together.

*Birthdays:  Aspen - likely 2001;  YoYo - likely 1991

*Homecoming: September 2, 2023

Tex, Toby, & Shakira

Tex (gray), Toby (dark bay), and Shakira (white donkey) joined the herd in August 2023.

This little herd had been together for more than 20 years when their owner unexpectedly passed away.  Their family asked if they could retire at GRS and has become a great supporter and champion of senior horses.  Tex and Toby are both retired roping horses.  Shakira and Tex have the strongest bond, but they are all three very close.  Toby is a giant!  Our biggest horse.  He loves belly rubs.  Tex really hates being caught and slowly avoids anyone with a halter.  Shakira makes us laugh with her big EEE-AWWW every time she sees the food truck!

*Birthdays:  Tex - May 4, 1995;  Toby - May 10, 2001; Shakira - likely 1990 or earlier

*Homecoming: August 1, 2023

twister & Flame

Flame (right) joined the herd in September 2022, and when Twister (left) joined the herd in October 2022 she quickly became attached to Flame.

Flame broke his leg in 2021 and numerous vets told his owner to put him down. She couldn't accept that and worked with a vet to come up with a plan. After a year of stall rest, his leg healed. But his owner couldn't care for him anymore. So GRS began additional rehab with Flame, and he is fully recovered and retired now. He has one eye that is clouded and his vision is impaired. He has regular visits to the ophthalmologist.

Twister worked at a kids camp for 13 years.  When the camp shut down its equine program, Twister came to GRS to retire.  She's very friendly and has decided that Flame is her new best friend!

*Twister's Birthday:  April 29, 1994

*Flame's Birthday: Likely 2008

*Twister's Homecoming: October 18, 2022

*Flame's Homecoming: Sept 8, 2022

Onyx & Bravo

Onyx & Bravo are brothers.  They aren't "residents".... they are our Ambassadors!

Onyx & Bravo help us at events and keep us entertained.  They are brothers and are registered miniature horses.  They love people and have big personalities.

 *Birthdays:   Onyx - April 6, 2020; Bravo - May 12, 2021

*Homecoming: Onyx - May 6, 2022; Bravo - August 13, 2022

DOC & Smoothie

We lost Doc on March 20, 2025.  He was loved big and will be missed bigger.

Doc (gray) joined the herd in July 2022.

Doc lost his best friend and really needed to be part of a herd.  He also suffered from an infection and lost one eye.  His mom asked if he could retire with us, and Doc had found his new best friend here at GRS - Smoothie!

*Birthday:  Likely 1993

*Homecoming: July 23, 2022

Smoothie (chestnut) joined the herd in August 2021.

Smoothie was a roping horse who developed stringhalt and was sent to the sale barn. Someone stepped in and took him home instead. Smoothie had surgery to try to correct his stringhalt, but it didn't work. When his family couldn't keep him, they asked for our help. Smoothie isn't in any pain - it just takes him a while to get where he's going. He loves mealtime and enjoys all the attention here. He's pictured here with his best friend Doc.

*Birthday: March 29, 2001

*Homecoming: August 22, 2021

Princess & Valentine

Princess & Valentine are sisters who joined the herd in August 2021.

Princess and Valentine have been together their whole life.  Their owner passed away and his family reached out to ask if they could retire here.  Their family gave us a lot of help ensuring we have everything they need.  The girls are enjoying their own pasture and having fun making friends over the fence.  They are loving the attention they get from our volunteers, and they really like treats!

P&V are fully sponsored today, but they'd love to have you support one of their friends!

 *Birthdays:   Princess -  March 17, 1994; Valentine - February 14, 1995

*Homecoming: August 23, 2021

Cash & Annie

Annie & Cash joined the herd in June 2021.

Annie passed away in August 2023.  Annie and Cash had been together for 22+ years and were a bonded pair that needed a place to retire.

Cash is an amazing "gentle giant".  He had extensive training and is very easy-going and extremely smart.  He misses his Annie and is sharing a pasture with Skip, who loved Annie as well.

Cash is fully sponsored, but they'd love for you to sponsor one of their friends!

*Birthdays:  Annie - March 25, 1991; Cash -  April 26, 1997

Hank

Hank joined the herd in June 2021.

Hank was a trail horse until he injured his hock. Surgery and other treatments didn't quite fix the problem, and his 'mom' found out about GRS through a weird connection to our Bingo --- so we had to take him! We got him injections and some Prevacox, and he's sound today. He's a sweetheart and fun to ride, and so he is helping out with lessons occasionally. Everybody loves him!

*Homecoming: June 30, 2021

Raie

Raie joined our herd in May 2020.

She came to us from Parker County Animal Control.  She was in a herd of 9 who were extremely starved, and as she's over 20, they asked for our help.  We began feeding her 4 times a day and giving her lots of attention.  She blossomed and within 2 months was healthy and shiny.

She's a sweet girl with good manners, and we've started her on trail riding.  She's in a pasture with Koni, and they are doing very well together!

Raie is fully sponsored, but she'd love for you to sponsor one of her friends!

*Birthday: Likely 2003

Romeo

Romeo is our first official resident and our sanctuary is named in his honor.

Romeo is a beautiful gray off-the-track-thoroughbred. (OTTB) His registered name is “Golden Reward."  Romeo was purchased for $30,000 as a 2-yr-old and ran 30 races in his career. While one of his parents won over $1M on the track, Romeo wasn’t as successful and was retired. There’s no history of his whereabouts from 2008-2015, just that he'd been in a pasture when a local stable bought him. He was neglected, injured, and not being treated, so I bought him as my first horse, my first rescue. And he started the journey that led to GRS.

Romeo will let you hug his neck and loves to trade “smoochies” for carrots. He really REALLY loves the vet, as he is capable of finding the most unbelievable ways to get injured on a regular basis. We think he just loves the attention.

*Birthday: March 9, 2002

*Homecoming: July 1, 2015

Poco

Poco was a trail horse at a B&B in the Texas Hill Country, but arthritis made it hard for him to handle the rocky, steep trails.

Poco was given to someone who had never had a horse before and ended up in sad shape on an unsafe property right on Hwy 281. “Uncle Frank” on our board of directors saw a posting on Facebook. “Aunt Amy” (also on the board) and I went to see him and we loved him. He followed us around like a puppy - a VERY large puppy.  He came home and began filling out with quality grain, supplements, hay and green grass. He has allergies and had lost patches of hair. He’s now on Platinum Performance Allergy and has a beautiful coat and no itching. We’ve had x-rays done of his feet, and he has some rotation and the bones aren’t quite right, so he’s mostly retired with some easy grass riding. He has special shoes and boots, and gets Bute on a regular basis. He’s the largest of the geldings, but the most easy-going. He is the worst beggar and will give you a good nudge if you don’t hand-out quick enough.  He has the most fantastic trot and lope.

*Birthday:  Unknown, likely in 2001

*Homecoming:  June 19, 2018

Koni

Konsuela (Koni) is a 29-yr-old registered Holsteiner mare.

She has settled in at GRS and gets along well with her pasture-mates, Peso and Raie.  Koni was a broodmare and never ridden, so we work consistently on manners and basic groundwork.  Koni "smiles" for German muffin treats!

*Birthday: 1995

*Homecoming: March 7, 2020

Jessie Jayne

Jessie Jayne is a free spirit who loves people!

She is a beautiful Arabian mix and is technically a pony at 14 hands tall. She is fast and can be very animated when she plays. She is loyal and really only wants to hang out with the other “girls”. She is extremely smart and keeps a sharp eye out for anyone who might have treats! Jesse Jayne came to us from the amazing Pegasus Project horse rescue in Ben Wheeler, Texas.

*Birthday: unknown, likely in 2009

*Homecoming: August 6, 2016
