Even when our horses are fully sponsored, we still need help with unexpected medical expenses. You can choose to donate to our "general fund" to help support the entire herd, or you can sponsor a horse that isn't yet sponsored. Sponsorship donations are tax deductible. Your donation helps provide the very best care!
You can view our residents who still need a sponsor and learn more about sponsorship from our main menus above.
Abby is a retired barrel horse who came to us with Waylon and Angel. She is black with a white blaze and has some Arabian in her that you can see from her delicate face. She is very personable and loves people and cookies, following you around to check your pockets. She stands politely for fly spray and the farrier but will not tolerate shots one bit!
*Birthday: Likely 1999
*Homecoming: July 29, 2023
Angel and Waylon had been together for 20 years. Angel was the first donkey to join GRS' family. She is very friendly and likes to just hang out. She loves feeding time and "talks" to us as soon as she sees the food truck. She wears a fly mask during summer because her nose gets sun-burned. She had a slight limp on her front right, but boots and anti-inflammatory medicine have kept her comfortable. She now hangs out on "the beach" with RJ.

Aspen and YoYo were loved, but their humans had serious health issues and could no longer care for them. They were on the way to the sale barn but a fantastic young lady stepped in and reached out to us, then one of our donors agreed to fully sponsor them.
YoYo is very shy. Aspen is the total opposite and is very interested in people (and cookies).
*Birthdays: Aspen - likely 2001; YoYo - likely 1991

Cowboy's mama rescued him in 2016 and thought he'd stay with her forever. She and her husband loved Cowboy so much, and Cowboy had several friends, both horses and donkeys, at their house. Sadly, Cowboy's mama got sick. She kept him at home as long as she could, but then asked if he could retire here. He is a big-time foodie and loves meals and cookies. He has a little arthritis and takes anti-inflammatory meds.
*Birthday: April 28, 2003

Flame broke his leg in 2021 and numerous vets told his owner to put him down. She couldn't accept that and worked with a vet to come up with a plan. After a year of stall rest, his leg healed but his owner couldn't care for him anymore. So GRS began additional rehab with Flame, and he is fully recovered and retired now. He has one eye that is clouded and his vision is impaired. He has regular visits to the ophthalmologist.

Hammy is a very big guy and a quiet, calm, all-around pleasure horse. He was donated to GRS when his owner "outgrew" him in skills. Hammy is now in with our big herd - Roux, Rexi, Jessie, and Hank. He and Roux have bonded and are a great pair. He's all settled in and very much loved!
*Birthday: Likely 2004
*Homecoming: July 27, 2024
Hank was a trail horse until he injured his hock. Surgery and other treatments didn't quite fix the problem, and his 'mom' found out about GRS through a weird connection to our Bingo --- so we had to take him! We got him injections and some Prevacox, and he's sound today. He's a sweetheart and helps out at Christmas as Santa Hank and at Valentine's in our kissing booth. Everybody loves him!

Jessie Jayne is a free spirit who loves people! She is a beautiful Arabian mix and is technically a pony at 14 hands tall. She is fast and can be very animated when she plays. She is loyal and really only wants to hang out with the other “girls”. She is extremely smart and keeps a sharp eye out for anyone who might have treats! Jesse Jayne came to us from the amazing Pegasus Project horse rescue in Ben Wheeler, Texas.
*Birthday: Likely in 2009

Konsuela (Koni) is a registered Holsteiner mare. She has settled in at GRS and gets along well with her pasture-mates, Peso and Raie and Abby. Koni was a broodmare and never ridden, so we work consistently on manners and basic groundwork. Koni "smiles" for German muffin treats!
*Birthday: 1995

Maggie is a registered quarter horse who had been working as a show horse in a special needs program in Weatherford. She has a stifle injury that ended her show career, so she came to retire at GRS. She has regular injections to keep her comfortable. She has a strong personality and is a great fit in with Princess and Valentine.
*Birthday: March 12, 2001
*Homecoming: March 18, 2021
Max is a registered quarterhorse paint who lived with one family his whole life. One of his people passed away, and the other had to move out of state so that his kids could take care of him. They thought they had a forever plan for Max, but it fell through. So Max came to us!
Max has some arthritis and skin allergies. He loves people and he really really loves the minis! He is very easy to handle - a gentle giant.
*Birthday: April 15, 1998
*Homecoming: October 17, 2023
Poco was a trail horse at a B&B in the Texas Hill Country, but arthritis made it hard for him to handle the rocky, steep trails. He was given to someone who had never had a horse, and ended up in sad shape on an unsafe property.
He came home to GRS and began filling out with quality feed and care. He has some hoof issues, so he has special shoes. He is the worst beggar and will give you a good nudge if you don’t hand-out quickly enough.
*Birthday: Likely 2001
*Homecoming: June 19, 2018
Princess and Valentine have been together their whole life. Their owner passed away and his family reached out to ask if they could retire here. Raie came to us from Parker County Animal Control. She was in a herd of 9 who were extremely starved, and as she's over 20, they asked for our help. We began feeding her 4 times a day and giving her lots of attention. She blossomed and within 2 months was healthy and shiny. She's a sweet girl with good manners and enjoys being in her herd.
*Birthday: Likely 2003

RJ is a cute mini-donkey with a big personality who came to us with Buster. RJ and Buster have been together for 13+ years. RJ is a little cautious around people, but we are working to win him over! He's a talker, and you can hear his eee-awww at feeding time, and pretty much any other time that he's feeling chatty.

Romeo was our first official resident and our sanctuary is named in his honor - his registered name is “Golden Reward." Romeo ran 30 races in his career. While one of his parents won over $1M on the track, Romeo wasn’t as successful and was retired. There’s no history of his whereabouts from 2008-2015. Injured and neglected, he started the journey that led to GRS.
Romeo will let you hug his neck and loves to trade “smoochies” for cookies.
*Birthday: March 9, 2002

Rosie was part of a very large owner surrender of ~35 horses, after a major loss in that family. The Humane Society of North Texas adopted part of that herd. Rosie is a well-bred, easy going quarter horse who was never ridden. She is the perfect companion for Buster, who is almost completely blind. She keeps him calm and is very happy hanging out with him. Rosie loves her hay and treats and is still deciding about "the people".
*Birthday: April 27, 2006
*Homecoming: December 27, 2024
Roux was purchased from the sale barn, but her owner couldn't afford to take care of her. When she came to GRS, she was extremely skinny. But even in her sad state, she was friendly and engaging. Roux loves people and she loves cookies! She was supposed to be a foster...but she's here to stay. Within a few months we had her back in great shape.

Smoothie was a roping horse who developed stringhalt and was sent to the sale barn. Someone stepped in and took him home instead. Smoothie had surgery to try to correct his stringhalt, but it didn't work. When his family couldn't keep him, they asked for our help. Smoothie isn't in any pain - it just takes him a while to get where he's going. He loves mealtime and enjoys all the attention here. Read his full story in our blog.
